Nominativ (Nominative Case)
In German, nouns appear in four cases depending on their role in the sentence: Nominativ, Akkusativ, Dativ, and Genitiv. Nominativ is the first and simplest of them: the form you see in the dictionary. The subject of the sentence—the person or thing doing the action—is always in the Nominativ. Before learning the other cases, you need to become familiar with Nominativ.
