Dativ (dative case)

The Dativ marks the indirect object — usually the person or thing that benefits from or receives an action ('to whom?'). It answers the question 'wem?' (to whom?). After the Akkusativ, the Dativ is the second and last big part of the German noun case system — once you understand both, you can read the 'role' of every noun in a sentence from its article.
