Adjectives as nouns: der Deutsche, ein Bekannter, etwas Neues
In German you can write an adjective with a capital letter and use it as a noun: 'der Deutsche' (German man), 'die Kranke' (sick woman), 'etwas Neues' (something new). These nouns are declined like adjectives, which is why the same word appears with two different endings: 'der Bekannte' and 'ein Bekannter'.
