There are two ways to talk about modal verbs (können, müssen, dürfen, wollen, sollen) in the past: the Präteritum (Ich musste arbeiten.) and the Perfekt (Ich habe arbeiten müssen.). In speech the Präteritum is used most, but you need to recognise the Perfekt 'double infinitive' for B1 reading and listening texts.
