Präteritum: conjugation of regular and irregular verbs

When speaking, Germans mostly talk about the past in the Perfekt, but newspaper reports, stories, fairy tales and formal texts use the Präteritum. The texts in the Lesen section of the B1 exam are full of the Präteritum; without recognising these forms, the texts are hard to understand. Using the Präteritum in your own writing (Schreiben) also makes your language look more mature.
